General internal medicine

Welcome to the North West London general internal medicine (GIM) specialty training programme. GIM incorporates both acute treatment of severe illness and on-going treatment management for patients with complex or multi-speciality problems.

In 2009 the Joint Royal College of Physicians Training Board reinstated the award for dual certificates of completion of training (CCTs) in GIM and acute medical specialties. Since, postgraduate medical trainees have the option to practice General Internal Medicine (GIM) alongside another medicine specialty or Acute Internal Medicine (AIM) as a sole specialty.

Trainees who achieve dual accreditation are able to manage a wide range of acute and chronic medical problems beyond their specialty, and gain acute medical unit or on-call skills.
